Vehicle Safety Recall: Volkswagen Recalls 80,000 Audi Models

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced a recall on Monday of the Audi Q7 crossover due to a problem with the vehicle’s exterior lighting system. Volkswagen is recalling nearly 80,000 Audi vehicles from the 2015-2017 model years.

The software glitch in question affects the cars’ side marker lights; the lights may be rendered inoperative when a car’s parking light or headlights are illuminated. As such, vehicles may become harder to see, increasing the possibility of a crash.

The recall affects the following models:

• 2016 Audi A3 cabriolet
• 2016 Audi A3 e-tron
• 2016 Audi A3 sedan
• 2017 Audi A4 sedan
• 2015-2017 Audi Q3
• 2017 Audi Q7
• 2016-2017 Audi TT coupe
• 2016 Audi TT roadster

Audi owners will receive recall notices via USPS, advising them to take their cars to dealerships for service; the dealerships will update the affected software at no charge.

An additional recall was announced today for the 2017 Audi Q7s; an improperly manufactured lower transverse pipe may weaken the seat structure, increasing the risk of injury to passengers during collisions. This is the second recall of the 2017 Q7 in the past three months. The recalled part is manufactured by AMVIAN Automotive and affects more than 19,200 Q7 SUVs. The defect may cause the third-row seatbacks to move forward under any kind of load, especially in a frontal collision. Even a minor impact could cause an occupant to be jerked and thrown around, leading to possible injuries.

The repair involves the installation of a support bracket to secure the third-row seat. Audi will mail recall notices to owners in October, asking them to take their Q7s to dealerships for service, which will be carried out free of charge.

The recall includes 2017 Audi Q7 vehicles built between August 30, 2015 and July 10, 2016.
