Recall Alert: Risk of Laceration; Pier 1 Recalls 140K Glass Doorknobs
Product Safety Alert: Pier 1 Recalls 140K Glass Doorknobs
Last week, Pier 1 Imports Inc., a publicly traded Texas retailer, sent out a tweet to their customers: “We found a potential issue with decorative glass knobs.” That “potential issue” led to the recall of around 140,000 glass doorknobs in the United States that were imported from India (where they were also manufactured). Pier 1 said that they received at least seven reports of injury or laceration linked to the glass doorknobs in question, which can allegedly break “during installation or while in use.”

Three models of Pier 1 doorknobs—Basic, Kira, and Facets—sold between September 2011 and October 2016 have been affected by the recall. The six to seven dollar doorknobs, found in Pier 1 dressers, cabinets and small drawers, were offered in clear, teal, green, aquamarine, champagne and silver, both online and in retail locations across the country. U.S. authorities said that an additional 17,600 defective knobs were sold north of the border in Canada.
Recent Pier 1 Chair Recalls
This Pier 1 doorknob recall comes after a string of Pier 1 chair recalls announced by the company because of unrelated fall hazards. In February, they had to recall around 800 of their Capella Island Swivel Dining Chairs because the base could allegedly break that led to reports of consumers falling to the ground. A month before that, in January 2016, it was 276,000 swinging chairs that were recalled because of a design flaw causing the model to allegedly tip over nearly 100 times, leading to over 20 injuries. And last year, in October, Pier 1 had to recall about 2,500 of their Katerina Swivel Armchairs, when five customers fell while trying out the chair in stores, which led to at least one significant injury.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has instructed consumers to stop using the recalled Pier 1 doorknobs immediately and return the potentially hazardous units to any Pier 1 location for a complete refund or store credit.
