Hitachi Nail Gun Recall after Reports of Injury, Partial Blindness
On March 11, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada, and Hitachi Koki announced a voluntary recall of approximately 65,000 coil nailers in the U.S. and Canada, citing a risk of serious injury from a faulty feeder mechanism that could allow nails to be ejected sideways from the gun.
The company has already received 37 incident reports of nails being ejected sideways from the gun, with 15 reports of injuries. Most injuries occurred near the eye, with five reports of partial blindness as a result of the incidents.
The recall affects all Hitachi coil nailers with model number NV83A2 and a manufacturing date between October 2002 and September 2005. The manufacturing date is found in the serial number at the end of the handle, with the first digit of the number representing the month and the second digit representing the year.
The coil nailers were sold at Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other home improvement stores nationwide and online from November 2002 through March 2006.
Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled nail guns immediately and contact Hitachi at 800-706-7337 for a free repair.
