On November 5, 2009, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Health Canada, and Adventure Playsets announced a voluntary nationwide recall of approximately 275,000 Adventure Playsets wooden play sets in the U.S. and 6,800 play sets in Canada, due to a fall hazard. The plastic-coated lumber on the horizontal ladder of the play sets can rot and weaken over time and pose a falling hazard, especially if swings are attached to the wooden beam.
Adventure Playsets has received more than 1,400 reports of the ladders rotting, with 16 injuries and nine emergency room visits. Injuries sustained include two arm fractures, lacerations, scrapes, and bruises in children younger than 8 years old.
The play sets were sold at Walmart, Toys “R” Us, Academy Sports, Menards, Mill stores, and online from January 2004 through December 2007.
The recall affects all Adventure Playsets wooden play sets with swings, slides, and ladders. The sets have an end ladder coated with cranberry or green plastic, as well as an overhead monkey bar ladder that also serves as a swing beam. The following model numbers are affected by the recall and can be found on the cover of the instruction manual:
- Bellevue 1-AP048 and 1-AP012 (previously recalled in 2006 for a detaching frame hazard)
- Belmont 1-AP003
