On May 20, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Walmart Stores Inc. announced a safety recall of approximately 900,000 General Electric 12-cup digital coffeemakers, citing a risk of fire and burn hazards to consumers.
Walmart has already received 83 reports of the coffeemakers overheating, smoking, melting, or catching fire, and there have been three reports of minor burn injuries to the hands, feet, or torso. Additionally, incidences of property damage were reported, with damage including a significant kitchen fire and damage to countertops, cabinets, and a wall.
The recall involves all GE-brand digital 12-cup coffeemakers that were sold in black or white in Walmart stores nationwide from March 2008 through January 2010 for about $30. Only units with the following model numbers printed on the bottom of the base have been recalled:
- 169164 (black)
- 169165 (white)
Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled coffeemakers immediately and return the item to any Walmart store for a full refund.
